Guitar effects can be used to modify the pitch, sound and tone of an electric guitar. They work electronically and come as devices of various shapes, colors and sizes. You can get guitar amplifiers, simulation software, rackmount preamplifiers or processors or effects pedals (also known as stomp boxes). The effects can make the sound from your electric guitar better suit the genre in which you play better. The effects are also used with other instruments in a variety of genres, such as metal, blues and electric bass or keyboard. An effects pedal is an effects unit which comes in a small metal chassis, commonly used by guitar players but also used by players of other instruments. You can use an effects pedal to modify the input timbre or sound quality and add effects such as fuzz, overdrive, distortion, reverberation, chorus, wah-wah, phaser, flanging or pitch shifting. If you play without using an effects pedal, it is usually called ´clean´ playing.
Effects pedals are placed on the floor and have large switches on them, which you operate with the foot. Volume, wah-wah and certain other effects can be modified using a foot-activated potentiometer, since the hands are occupied playing the instrument. Any button or slider on the effect pedal must be large enough to use easily. You can get multi-effect boxes that have many interesting effects, some of which will make your guitar sound like a totally different instrument!
Guitar effects come in a wide variety, although most effects are variations on four basic themes, which are distortion, dynamics, reverb/delay, and pitch modulation. The most commonly used effect is overdrive and distortion although there are hundreds of different effects available. It can be more difficult than it sounds to learn how to use an effect pedal to its best potential and it takes a lot of practice and experimenting to get some good sounds. There are plenty of effect pedals on the market and it is worth trying various ones to find what is best for you. You can use your amplifier to achieve tonal distortion but you will get more flexibility with a separate distortion effect unit. One interesting effect is the TS9 Tubescreamer, made by Ibanez, which adds vacuum-like distortion using transistors to the guitar's output signal. You can get a Uni-vibe effect, which is like a chorus with added vibrato - a favorite of Jimi Hendrix. Both Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix were fans of wah pedals too.
A lot of the pedals on the market these days allow you the utmost in flexibility, controlling the effects to a fine degree, which can take a lot of time to get used to. But, ultimately, it can give you great guitar playing mastery.
