Electric Guitar Playing Tips

Electric Guitar Playing For Beginners

If you are seriously considering learning to play the guitar, it is far better to learn on an acoustic guitar before progressing to an electric or semi-acoustic model. A different approach is used when playing an acoustic guitar, and an electric guitar uses steel strings instead of nylon. Playing an acoustic guitar for any length of time will give you small calluses on your fingers and toughen them up a bit but playing steel strings with soft, unaccustomed fingertips can be a very sore experience.

An electric guitar is very different, in terms of qualities and features, than an acoustic guitar. The variety of controls and knobs are great for fine-tuning your sound and playing experience but it is wrong to assume that playing an electric guitar will be easy or that effects can hide ineptness. An electric guitar requires sensitivity and experimentation. It is a fantastic instrument and can be very rewarding to play, once you've got the hang of it.

When you have invested in a good electric guitar, you need a decent amp. No matter how great your electric guitar is, if your amp is poor, the resulting sound will not be good. Test the amp at the guitar shop. If you are allowed to, turn all the knobs to full, then test it again to see how it sounds. Some amps feature an optional built-in distortion option. If you aren't planning to purchase an effects box, this can be very useful.

So you are happy with your electric guitar and your amp - now what? Well, a very useful tool to have when playing an electric guitar is an effects box. A good one will feature distortion sounds, reverb, chorus and an amp simulator and should be easy to adjust and use. Another important factor in kitting yourself out is to make sure you get quality cables. Cheap cables have a short life expectancy and you will have to replace them often. It is worthwhile to invest in good quality cables to optimize your whole guitar playing experience.

If you have decided to learn to play the electric guitar, you will need to be familiar with the way it sounds. It is a good idea to listen to diverse pieces of music produced with this instrument to appreciate the wide range of sounds that can be made. Many popular genres feature the use of electric guitars because of its great flexibility and unique sound. Listening to different tunes and riffs can teach you plenty. If you are a good acoustic guitar player, there are other lessons to be learned before you can master the electric guitar. But practice does make perfect and a willingness to learn along with a good ear for music is usually all that is required in your quest to become a proficient electric guitar player and achieve great satisfaction and pleasure from playing.
