Plectrums are often called guitar picks or even sometimes they are known of as plectra. Plectrums are usually very cheap to buy; yet they can make a significant impact into the sound your guitar makes. They come in various shapes, sizes, colors, thickness properties and materials. This is one of the reasons that plectrums have become a collector's item for many enthusiasts.
Sharp-tipped thin plectrums will generally provide a bright, pointed attack with a fair amount of pick clicking noise evident. Conversely, round-tipped thick plectrums (about 1.5mm) provide very broad and warm tones with less pronounced attack and less pick noise on the strings. It is possible to find some plectrums that have different edges. With these types of plectrums, you can obtain different types of sounds with the same plectrum. The roughness of the surface of a plectrum used will also have an impact on the type of sound made from your guitar.
There are many different material types used for making plectrums and of course, they all give different types of sounds. The most common type of material is made from plastic, of which delrin, nylon and tortex are the most common. Other materials used include Celluloid, felt, metals, stones, wood, graphite and at one stage, tortoise shells. Celluloid was the original material used as plectrums and many still use it today despite the fact that celluloid is flammable. Tortoise shells were quite popular until they were banned in the mid-1970s. There are a number of different metals used, including copper, aluminum and stainless steel. Some guitar players have been known to play their guitar with coins as plectrums.
It is best to experiment with different types of plectrums to find the right type/types for your particular music style/styles. Below is a sample of plectrums available. If you use the power search from the left hand side of this page and type "guitar picks", then you should be able to find many more.
