Song Writing With An Electric Guitar

If you like to write songs or if you would like to try your hand at it, the electric guitar is one of the best instruments to use. You can adjust the knobs and settings on the amplifier to create different sounds and effects such as chorus or reverb. You can alter the bass, middle, treble and gain to achieve the exact sound you have in mind whilst writing your song. This can be a big help, whether you prefer to write the words first, get the music right first or create the music and words together. If you have delay effects and overdrive on hand, this can spark your imagination and make writing a unique song far less daunting and much more fun. A simple acoustic guitar can also be used but you will have fewer options with it.

Reverb can add depth to the sound. Some amps feature built in effects such as distortion or flanger but even if your amp does not, you can buy separate pedals to achieve the effects you have in mind. You can even try effects that you don't think would suit your song because you might be surprised and find the effects sound great and enhance what you are trying to do or give you fresh creative ideas.

Good recording equipment is very important too, although a 4 or 8 track cassette recorder should be enough. You could use a microphone to record music straight on to your computer hard drive instead. When you play it back, you can record yourself playing over the top of it. Listening to the playback is very interesting because when you are playing, you are focusing on that. If you are concentrating on listening without a guitar in your hand, you can hear a lot more. Try it and see what I mean!

It is all very well to play well-known songs as this improves your guitar playing, your tablature reading ability and also it is fun but it does not really inspire you creatively. If you enjoy music, you will probably want to give penning your own song a try. First you should be proficient in playing chords so when you have a tune in your head, you can easily play it on your guitar. Don't worry if you don't get inspired straightaway because all writers suffer writer's block on occasion! Sometimes words will flow into your mind and you will have to rush to get them all on paper. Other times your mind will be empty and uninspired. That is always the way with writing.

If you have many different guitar effects, whether on your amp or on pedals, use them. Experiment with them. You have all the time in the world to write a great song. There is no sense in rushing because the result will not be as good as it could otherwise be.
