Guitar strings are a very important component of electric guitars. Tonal characteristics of your instrument can vary depending on the strings you choose to use. If you went into a store, you would find many different types of guitar strings for sale but the basic 3 types of strings are electric, acoustic, steel and nylon. However, not all guitar strings are suitable for electric guitars. For example, nylon strings (which are used for classical guitars) do not have any magnetic metals and therefore would not work on an electric guitar. Acoustic steel strings will fit on an electric guitar, but they are heavier than that used on an electric guitar, and this can damage the instrument. Steel core-wire strings will work on an electric guitar, but the windings are made from bronze and therefore they would not work very efficiently. Electric guitar strings can be bought and used with different gauge sizes. Heavy gauges are used for more tone and sustain while lighter gauges are used for a softer feel. Round-wound, flat-round and ground wound are the 3 winding types available to choose from. The strings that use round wire for the winding are the most popular. Pure nickel, nickel-plated, polymer coating, gold plated and stainless steel are the electric string compounds available to choose from. A round wound nickel-plated steel string set is considered the best all round set, however once you decide what gauge suits you best you can try different compounds and winding types to find which string set suits you best. Below are some examples of strings suitable for electric guitars.
You can perform a power search with "guitar strings" in the search bar on the left menu to find other types of strings.
