Vintage Electric Guitars

People like to collect different things - stamps, coins or dolls perhaps - but if you really appreciate music, a vintage electric guitar collection could be an incredible investment. Paintings and sculptures can be gazed at in awe but a guitar is made to be looked at and listened to and there are a number of guitar connoisseurs who delight in collecting them. American vintage guitars in immaculate condition can be of medium, high or priceless value, no matter whether they are of historical importance or not. A vintage guitar can fetch an astronomical figure when auctioned.

Pre-World War Two flattop acoustic guitars are amongst the most sought after vintage electric guitars. In the 1950s and 1960s, Gibson, Fender, and Gretsch produced several unique electric guitars that are in great demand even now and are always being hunted for by collectors.

When classifying a vintage guitar, there are several factors that determine its worth. The model, age, manufacturer and uniqueness of the instrument are very important, as are the sound, artistic inclination, rarity, overall condition and historical importance. Nearly all vintage guitars boast fine and unique workmanship and special designs.

You should check that the guitar has all its original hardware and that the tuning pegs, bridges and pickups have not been replaced. If they have, the guitar might have a better sound but it will also have lost some of its value. A true vintage guitar is better to have all its cracks and dents that to have had work done trying to get rid of them. Quality tone woods include maple and mahogany and guitars made from these tend to be superior. Quality vintage electric guitars that offer an acoustic output will have a spruce top and a maple back and sides. If the guitar is solid maple, then it will be cheaper. Alder, kornia and ash are other tone woods that are used for vintage electric guitars.

Remember also that just because something is rare does not mean it is worth a lot of money. An example is the electric mandolin. These are rare instruments but not many people are interested in them, which bring their price down. Check the neck joint, too, because loose neck joints are not very good at handling a lot of vibration. Some electric guitar makers glue the neck joints in production, which gives a better result.

It can take a very long time to find a buyer for a vintage guitar because they are far from cheap. Sometimes these instruments find their way to consignment shops, which is how they make their cut of the profit. Vintage electric guitar owners regularly use consignment shops as a go-between and the shop pays them a discounted rate. If you wish to buy a vintage guitar, you should check the guitar's credibility to make sure it is a valuable original and not a fake and it goes without saying that you should invest in insurance for your valuable piece.
